MAKING THE CROP SECTOR SUSTAINABLE

BY NURTURING DIFFERENCE

Expert in setting up crop production networks and special processing of oilseeds and protein plants (linseed, soybeans, rapeseed, beans, peas, lupin) for both animal feed and human food, Valorex promotes the introduction of new break crops by setting up production networks that are sustainable and profitable along the entire chain.

Among Valorex’s goals is making crop rotations longer, improving soil structure and health, reducing the use of plant protection products and restricting soybean imports, whilst at the same time ensuring profitability for crop farmers.

Bringing oilseed and protein-rich break crops back to the fore starts with setting up traced production networks with certified seeds selected by varietal choice. These production networks are further encouraged through guaranteed price agreements and a yearly production commitment.

Valorex pays for quality from seed collector organisations and crop farmers

For years, Valorex has been working with collector organisations who play a fundamental role in supplying certified seeds to farmers, monitoring crops and seed traceability, and providing technical advice tailored to the region and its soil and climate conditions.

In a spirit of partnership, Valorex wants progressively improved seed quality to boost the income of crop farmers. Each batch of seeds coming from collector organisations undergoes analysis to accurately determine not only its water content, but also its content in valuable nutritional ingredients: for linseed, its Omega-3 and fat content, and for protein-rich seeds, their protein content. The collector organisation receives a bonus governed by the content of these valuable nutrients.

Valorex draws up the guaranteed price agreement for crop farmers and a duration commitment

The guaranteed price is defined in the agreement on a multiannual basis for different oilseeds and protein crops. This agreement sets a price range that, regardless of the market price of oilseeds and protein crops, specifies a minimum price for the crop farmer and a maximum price for the livestock farmer. This guaranteed price is negotiated between the crop farmer and Valorex, most often via its storage agencies.

This is an impressive commitment by Valorex, because we make it upstream of the producer in terms of price and volume, fully aware of the vagaries of future markets, outlets and values. For example, an agreement negotiated in the spring of year “y” will give rise to signing a contract in the autumn of that same year. It binds the farmer to sowing in October-November and harvesting in July-August of year “y+1”. And delivery may be extended up to June of year “y+2”, i.e. more than two years after the agreement was initially negotiated.
